Ironing out the carbon emissions of clinker production

17 October 2023, Published under Cement News

The use of iron-rich industrial wastes can provide one of the pathways to decarbonising the global cement industry with high-ferrite cement types embodying less CO 2 than their ordinary counterparts. By Cecilia Pesce, Aniruddha Baral, Anna Simmons and Theodore Hanein, The University of Sheffield, UK. Figure 1: estimates of potential raw meal replacement, calcium replacement, and raw materials-related CO 2 savings by using different types of iron-rich waste products in differen...

New material research aims to reduce the environmental impact of cement and steel industries

22 December 2021, Published under Cement News

Researchers from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Sheffield are developing processes and technologies for the sustainable manufacture of cement, by incorporating iron-rich by-products from the steel industry.   The research programme, which starts in June 2022, will be known as 'FeRICH: developing iron-rich cement for the valorisation and upcycling of steel slags'. It will look at ways to upcycle the by-products of the steel industry, leading to the pr...
